Senior Pastor, Matt CollinsMatt Collins grew up in a rural community - not unlike eastern Iowa - of about 20,000 people in western New York, near the Pennsylvania border. Raised in a Catholic family with five brothers, he was friends with some guys in high school who began attending a Bible study; he went along. There, the gospel was shared in a loving way (Ephesians 2:8-9) and, as a result, Matt asked Christ to be his Savior and Lord..."a decision I've never regretted," he says. After high school, Matt attended and graduated from a technical school, then worked as a technician for a firm in Rochester, New York. Matt met his wife Carol when he was asked to drive his landlady to church, a church that turned out to be pastored by Carol's father. The two began dating during Carol's senior year of high school. They both completed their studies at Moody Bible Institute in May, 1982, where Matt majored in pastoral studies; Carol in communications. The couple married in August of that same year. Together they are parents to five boys ranging in age from 10 to 22.

His education...Grace Theological Seminary / Winona Lake, IN / D. Min. -- Attended 1991-96

Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary / Grand Rapids, MI / M. Div. -- Attended 1984-89

Moody Bible Institute / Chicago, IL / Diploma - Pastoral / Greek -- Attended 1979-82 His ministry experience...

Senior Pastor / Hope Evangelical Free Church / Dubuque, IA -- 1998-presentSenior Pastor / Broadalbin Baptist Church / Broadalbin, NY --1990-1998Youth Pastor / Thornapple Evangelical Covenant Church / Grand Rapids, MI -- 1986-1989With Wycliffe Bible Translators / University of North Dakota -- summer of 1986Interim Youth Pastor / Berean Baptist Church / Grand Rapids, MI -- 1985-1986

Director of Christian Education / Grace Baptist Church / Brockport, NY -- 1982-1984

Spiritual gifts... Evangelism, preaching, teaching, shepherding. Matt's fun-loving approach to life and his easy-going Matt's fun-loving approach to life and his easy-going sense of humor seem to naturally draw people in. This personal appeal is central to his preaching style and key as he develops relationships with people. But it never ends there; he consistently and clearly points the way to the One who first loved us.Philosophy of ministry... Matt Collins' love for God's people is reflected in his shepherding approach to them; it is also foundational to his desire to expand Hope Church's ministry influence in the Dubuque area. After being introduced to the multi-site concept several years ago, he is convinced he has found the most effective and efficient approach that will support his commitment - and the commitment of this body of believers - to bringing the Good News to all who will hear it as we work together to help people connect with God.

Sue cites Ephesians 2:8-9 as key verses to her salvation decision, and she also loves Psalm 139 for all that it has to say about our God and his knowledge of us. Says Sue, "This Psalm has a great message for youth in that God knows all about us and loves us. I think students are trying constantly to make themselves loveable to others. What a relief that we don't have to work to impress God!"

Goal: to minister to the specific needs of women at Hope Church.

Activities: Discipleship, Small Group Bible Studies, care meals, prayer ministry, wraps of love ministry, special events / functions / outreach events.

Fall 2008 Studies:

Power of a Praying Woman Video Series (Tuesday mornings, Sept. 9 - Nov. 25 from 9:15 - 11:15 a.m.) -- Stormie Omartian has led millions of women into deeper, more fulfilling prayer lives. Now, through her knowledge of the Scripture and candid examples of her own epiphanies in prayer, she will show us how to draw closer to God; know His plans and purposes for our lives, and receive comfort, help and strength for everyday living.

This study will help you trust God with deep longings, not just pressing needs, cover every area of life with prayer, and maintain a right heart before God.

Acts -- The Spread of the Gospel (Tuesday mornings, Sept. 9 - Nov. 25 from 9:15 - 11:15 a.m. with Janet Zimmerman) -- Luke wrote the book of Acts as a testament to the explosive spread of the gospel and the rapid growth of the church after Christ's ascension. Beginning with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the new church was born, and Christ empowered His followers with His divine authority to preach the gospel to all nations. Amongst persecution and opposition, the early believers relied on God's spirit for direction and wisdom. As He does today, God showed his infinite power, regardless of the circumstances.

Join us as we follow John MacArthur's study guide on Acts. We'll witness the birth of the church, Saul's dramatic conversion, and the spread of Christianity! MacArthur brings Acts to light in this verse-by-verse study and offers vital background information and cross-references to related passages.

2 Timothy Precept Upon Precept Bible Study (Wednesday Evenings Sept. 3 - Dec. 10 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. with Carolyn Crowe) -- The church's continued growth leans heavily upon its structure of discipleship. Faithful men and women must instruct, exhort and encourage younger believers in the Lord. No better example of such biblical discipleship exists than what is recorded in the Apostle Paul's second letter to his son in faith, Timothy.

Careful attention to Paul's committed investment in Timothy will remind you of important principles for growth -- be courageous, guard the truth, work faithfully, endure, and be faithful to the Word.

The Precept Upon Precept study method, written by Kay Arthur, is being used around the world by people seeking to know the truths of the World of God for themselves. These in-depth studies are widely acclaimed for their practical, personal approach to Bible study. This study includes homework, discussion and a powerful lecture time to direct you in unlocking the message of God's word. Fee includes workbook and study aides.

Servant Leadership (Monday evenings, Sept. 8-Nov. 24 from 6:15-7:30 with Brenda Janco OR Tuesday mornings, Sept. 9-Nov. 25 from 9:15-11:15 with Jodi Lockwood) -- Are we to lead or serve? To the world, leadership and servanthood seem in direct contrast. But to a Christian, leadership is best played out through a life poured out. Today many women serve in a wide variety of roles. But how does she fill those roles as a servant leader? Join us for a comprehensive study of biblical servant leadership. Topics range from the discerning of your calling, a vision, and your character to recognizing leadership styles, personal limits, and dealing with varying personalities. Whether you're a leader in the home, on the job or in the church, this 12-week study is for you. Click here to download the morning/evening break brochure with registration form.

RELATIONSHIPS: "MOPS is a great way to connect and make 'instant friends' who understand your phase of life and know exactly what you are experiencing." - Heidi

GROWTH: "I started going to MOPS meetings at the suggestion of my doctor and can't believe how much I love it and how much it has helped me take on the challenge of mothering!" - Tamara

HELP: "MOPS introduced me to people that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise, yet those that know how I'm feeling and thinking and can relate to a lot of problems I have every day." - Tiffany

IDENTITY: "I swear MOPS saved my sanity! Attending this group has pulled me out of a place I never knew I could get to. I had a VERY hard time adjusting to motherhood, I quit my job to stay at home and somehow over time I completely forgot about me. I took very good care of my husband and my daughter, but never seemed to have time left for myself. Finally I joined MOPS and it was exactly what I needed for me!" - Allison

HOPE: "Every time I went to MOPS I was assured that I was not alone, everybody struggles sometimes, and as much as we LOVE our children it is good to have time away. We are far away from family and MOPS really helped." - Carol

Experience warmth and shared wisdom from other moms - not all the same age, lifestyle, or background - but all with a shared desire to be the best mothers they can be. Join us for candid discussions on the topics that shape your life...from potty training and dealing with sibling rivalry to keeping your sanity and maintaining a healthy marriage.

Using the “theme park adventure” as our guide we will explore together life as a mom, where packed with excitement and surprises, we will attempt to navigate through the merry-go-rounds, roller coasters and bumper cars of our days with little ones.

Not only do we have two morning MOPS groups, meeting twice monthly on either Wednesday or Thursday, but this fall we will launch a NEW Evening MOPS group. The evening group will meet once a month, providing a much needed break for moms in our community who have been unable to attend our morning MOPS program.

RSVP is our Middle School youth program. The name RSVP is based on the idea that we have all received an invitation to have a relationship with God. We need to respond to that invitation. RSVP meets on Thursday nights from 6:30-8:30. We play games, build friendships and spend time learning from God's word. In additon, we usually have one Big Event each month. Big Events usually do not have a lesson and are good opportunities for new students to make a connection.

A three-stranded rope isn't easily snapped. Eccl. 4:12. We want to encourage students to build a network of friends to support and encourage them in difficulties and to be positive influences on them in a world full of negativity. 123 meets on Sunday nights from 6:30-9:00. During 123, we play games, build friendships with peers, spend time learning from God's word and helping students to connect with God. ALL 9th-12th grade students are welcome at 123.

Are you currently pregnant or parenting a baby or toddler? We're here to help!

We realize that pregnancy and parenting are filled with lots of uncertainty. New Beginnings is a program that will help answer many of the questions you have in order to ease your anxiety -- all while you earn credits for baby clothes, supplies and furniture.

During your hour-long, one-on-one appointments, a female mentor will provide you with the support and resources you need during this time of transition. The lessons are fun, practical and designed to help you become the best parent you can be.

Our offices are located in the Hope Church building, and we do provide rides when needed.

Interested in learning more about New Beginnings or setting up an appointment? Call 563.556.7724 or e-mail newbeginnings@ehope.org.

Read on for what others have to say about their experiences with New Beginnings:

A mother to an infant and 3-year-old said, "I really appreciate this program. It's interesting and a lot of help to me and my family. I really didn't know how I was going to make it before I took these classes!"

Nichole, who is pregnant said, "I enjoy the knowledge I receive in New Beginnings. I was amazed by the amount of information I was given. It all makes me feel more comfortable with what I am going through, because I know more about what to expect."

Joe & Donna serve with the Evangelical Free Church Mission in the city of Brno in the Czech Republic as church planting missionaries. Joe had formerly served as an associate pastor at the Platteville Ev Free Church. We began supporting them in 1999. One of their most effective tools to reach people for Christ is "English" camps where people come to practice their English speaking skills and hear the Gospel, as well. They also reach out to neighborhood people through friendship evangelism.

After being on home assignment for 18 months, they returned to Czech Republic in December, 2004, with hopes to begin the steps of setting up a church plant.

Keith & Jo Amunson became part of our missionary family in 2002. They are currently ministering in the Dyersville Ev Free Church, but as God leads, would like to return to their former field of ministry, the Philippines, where they served as church planters for 20 years. Their sending mission was the Evangelical Free Church Mission. They returned to the US about 6 years ago because of educational needs of their son, Brent, and they have been pastoring the Dyersville Church all of these years. They also have a daughter, Christi.

Please pray for their special support needs and for their ministry in Dyersville. Also pray for guidance about if and when they would return to the Philippines.

Ray & Susan Stensgard (and their Yorkie - Max) are church planting missionaries with Greater Europe Missions. Their field of service is Belgium. Our relationship with Ray & Susan began in the mid 1980s when they became the first missionaries that Hope Church began to support. Because of their faithful service, an evangelical church with as many as 150 attenders has been established in Wavre and another small church is alive and growing in nearby Ganshoren.

Please pray for Ray & Susan as they continue to disciple and reach out to Belgian people. Pray that the Holy Spirit will touch the hearts of Belgian people and bring "seekers" to them.

Believing means trust and commitment - acknowledging our sinfulness, trusting Christ's forgiveness and letting Him control our life. Eternal, abundant life is a gift for us to receive.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life." (John 5:24)

Is there any reason why you shouldn't cross over to God's side and be certain of eternal life?

Jesus said to love God and love your neighbor also. We believe that those relationships are the key to a God honoring spiritual growth. Our focus in our small groups is to facilitate growth in those relationships by creating an environment which offers encouragement, accountability, belonging and care as one grows in those relationships. Our goal is that everyone is connected to a small group and grow in their:Intimacy with God
Community with Those Inside the Church
Influence with Those Outside the Church

By God’s grace Hope church will be a GROWING community that will make an eternal difference beginning in Dubuque, Iowa.

As a Church we will Grow Warmer...

As Christ loved us, so we will be a people who will love Him and love one another. We will express our love for Him through our weekend worship services. We will strive to have biblically based and practically relevant messages that inspire, correct and encourage. We are committed to excellence and authenticity in worship. We will express our love for one another chiefly through our small groups ministries and accountable relationships.

As a Church we will Grow Deeper...

By God’s grace Hope Church will be a people who grow in their walk with God. We’ll encourage this growth through inspiring worship services, relevant biblical messages, authentic small groups, children’s education and other growth opportunities. We are committed to holistic spiritual development: seeing people become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. We seek to have two-thirds of our attendees in active discipleship training and demonstrating personal spiritual growth.

As a Church we will grow more Active...

By God’s grace Hope Church will be a people who are not just hearers of the Word, but also doers. Living out our walk is one of the most tangible expressions of our faith and our relationship with God. Our believers will be active both inside and outside of Hope Church. It is our passion that the believers of Hope Church will share Christ in every public and private arena of their communities, including their homes, marketplaces and schools. We seek to have half of our attendees actively involved in ministry. As a church, we look to serve our communities, both Christian and secular.

As a Church we will Grow Closer...

By God’s grace Hope Church will seek to be a people who understand and seek biblical community. We believe that community takes place best in small groups. To that end we will seek to have three-fourths of our attendees meeting in small groups.

As a Church we will Grow Wider...

By God’s grace Hope Church will seek to be a people who are ready, willing and able to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that our people will reach out to the world with God’s love, starting with their friends, families and communities, and ultimately reach beyond the local area through the missions ministry. It is our desire that God will allow Hope Church to introduce 500 people to new life in Christ over the next five years. To that end, Hope Church will expand its JFK campus to accommodate weekend worship of 1,000 and start multiple campus sites capable of supporting up to 200 weekend worshipers each.

The Evangelical Free Church of America is an association of some 1,300 autonomous churches united by a mutual commitment to serve our Lord Jesus Christ with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and obedience to the Word of God. We are committed to cooperate with one another in ministry and fellowship as we seek to fulfill the Great Commission which Christ has entrusted to His Church. The growing ministry of the EFCA currently extends to some 45 countries of the world.

What Does "Evangelical" Mean?
The term Evangelical refers to our commitment to the proclamation of the Gospel and to the authority of Scriptures as being inerrant in the original writings and the only safe and sufficient guide to faith and practice.

What Does "Free" Mean?
The term Free refers to our form of church government as being congregational. Evangelical Free Churches depend upon the active participation of lay people in the decisions and directions.

Step Three: God's Remedy, The Cross - Connect with Jesus

Jesus Christ is the only answer to this problem. He died on the cross and rose from the grave, paying the penalty for our sin and bridging the gap between God and people.

"For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God..." (I Peter 3:18)

"For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ." (I Timothy 2:5)

"But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

Step Two: Our Problem - Separation From God - Connect with Jesus

God created us in His own image to have abundant (meaningful) life. He did not make us robots to automatically love and obey him, but he gave us a will and a freedom of choice.

We chose to disobey God and go our own willful way. We still make this choice today. This results in separation from God.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)

"...your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you so that he will not hear." (Isaiah 59:2)

On our own, there's no way we can attain the perfection needed to bridge the gap to God. Through the ages, individuals have tried many ways...without success.

Good works won't do it...or religion...or money...or morality...or philosophy...

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." (Proverbs 14:12)

Step One: God's Love and His Plan - Connect with Jesus

Jesus said, "...I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." - (John 10:10b)

"...we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1)

Since God planned for us to have peace and abundant life right now, why are most people not having this experience?
