The Way

Updated: Feb 14, 2022

This weekend I had the joy of singing Pat Barret’s the song, “The Way,” with those of you who attended the Kennedy Campus. Aren’t the lyrics such an encouragement? What I cherish about songs like this is there’s so much truth packed into them. It helps bring me around to a right perspective of who God is, who I am, and what that means for today and the future.

I am so grateful for the gift of music and its power to draw me into meditating on the awesomeness of our God! Music can do this best when you’ve spent time in His word and hidden it in your heart. So I wanted to go through the lyrics and share a bunch of scripture references the lyrics point to in case you’d like to dig into the truths of this song for yourself. Enjoy!

THE WAY by Ben Smith, Daniel Bashta and Pat Barrett

Verse 1

Through every battle

Through every heartbreak

Through every circumstance

I believe that You are my fortress

Oh You are my portion

You are my hiding place

Oh I believe You are

The first verse puts right out there that most often it’s our struggles that stand between us and God as we approach Him. So the author calls that out and reminds himself that God is his fortress, his portion and his hiding place. The imagery speaks of protection and provision.

Fortress: Psalm 18:2, 31:3, 92:2; 2 Samuel 22:1-3

Portion: Psalm 16:5; Lamentations 3:24; Psalm 73:26

Hiding Place: Psalm 32:7, Psalm 31:19-20, Psalm 119:114

Chorus

The Way the Truth the Life

I believe You are

The Way the Truth the Life

I believe You are

The chorus is a direct quote of Jesus from John 14:6. So good to remind ourselves of our salvation!

Verse 2

Through every blessing

Through every promise

Through every breath I take

I believe that You are provider

You are protector

You are the One I love

I believe You are

Verse 2 speaks to the truth in James 1:17, that every good thing in our lives, including life itself, is a gift from God.

Provider: Philippians 4:19; Psalm 23:1; Luke 12:24; Genesis 22:14

Protector: Psalm 54:5, Psalm 91:1-16, Psalm 121:1-8

Bridge

It's a new horizon

And I'm set on You

And You meet me here today

With mercies that are new

All my fears and doubts

They can all come too

Because they can't stay long

When I'm here with You

When I believe You are

CCLI Song # 7089024

God’s grace and mercy are available to us anew every day, actually every moment of every day! He waits for us to return to Him. See Lamentations 3:22-23 and Hebrews 10:23. I’d encourage you to choose to turn your face to His and let the truth of who He is as expressed through His word comfort your spirit and give you the strength to release your cares to His wisdom, strength and care.
